Kathmandu: Gokul Baskota, a prominent figure within the Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) party and considered close and trustworthy to UML President KP Sharma Oli, has recently voiced his dissatisfaction with Oli's leadership. Communication between Oli and Baskota has ceased for the past two months, and Baskota's discontent has grown following a decision made by the Central Committee.

Baskota has expressed disagreement with the party's decision to marginalize leaders by keeping Members of Parliament (MPs) away from development-related work. He has also raised concerns about the implementation of UML's latest policies and decisions, emphasizing that party leaders and workers should not be treated as civil servants subject to annual transfers based on party policies and procedures, as per sources says.

This dissatisfaction with President Oli's leadership highlights growing tensions within the UML party. The consequences of Baskota's discontent remain uncertain and may influence the party's future actions and internal dynamics. Notably, Baskota has not carried out his assigned duties in Sindhupalchowk after the party posted Krishna Rai from Kathmandu to his constituency.

In other developments, the UML has decided to launch a nationwide campaign aimed at organizing youth into committees, with a specific focus on reserving 35 percent of committee seats for individuals below 35 years of age. This campaign is scheduled to take place in November and will primarily target the mid-mountain road and postal route spanning from the east to the west of the country.

Furthermore, the UML aims to increase its membership to 33 percent of the total voters through the renewal of party memberships and the distribution of new subscriptions by June. In line with their efforts to provide executive responsibilities to all members, the UML has implemented significant changes in the roles and responsibilities of 360 central members, including senior vice presidents. Co-in-charge and deputy chief positions have been eliminated, and central-level leaders have been appointed as in-charges up to the municipal level. The central members are now accountable to the respective district municipalities.

As the UML faces internal tensions due to Gokul Baskota's dissatisfaction with President Oli's leadership, the party is simultaneously striving to rejuvenate itself by organizing youth committees and assigning executive responsibilities to all members.
